As the data continues to pour in showing that cellphones distract drivers more states are making it illegal to talk on a cellphone without a handsfree device while operating a motor vehicle.
Currently there are laws on the books of five states - California, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Washington, plus the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands. these jurisdictions have cell phone laws prohibiting driving while talking on handheld cell phones. With the exception of Washington, a police officer may ticket a driver for using a cell phone while driving without any other traffic violation.
As far as texting goes there are now four states - Alaska, Minnesota, New Jersey and Washington, that have a legal text messaging ban for all drivers.
With both California and New York now on board we predict many more states will follow and this will become the norm. This is likely to result in continued innovation of bluetooth and even tighter integration with auto manufacturers.
